Conditional Sentences are usually known as Conditional Clauses or If Clauses. Conditional sentences are used to express that the action in the main clause (without if) can only happen if a certain condition (in the clause with if) is fulfilled. Conditional sentences are actually sentences with cause and effect relationship.
There are three types of Conditional Sentences.
Conditional Sentence Type 1
Example: If I know her, I will invite her
Pattern: If+Simple Present, Present Future
Meaning: It is possible that the condition will be fulfilled
Conditional Sentence Type 2
Example: If I knew her, I would invite her
Pattern: If+Simple Past, Past Future
Meaning: It is possible but very unlikely, that the condition will be fulfilled
Conditional Sentence Type 3
Example: If I had Known her, I would have invited her
Pattern: If+Past Perfect, Past Future Perfect
Meaning: It is impossible that the condition will be fulfilled because it refers to the past.
