Beberapa kata kerja (verb) bisa diikuti baik oleh infinitif maupun oleh gerund. Kata kerja seperti ini selanjutnya bisa dibagi menjadi dua kelompok. Kelompok pertama adalah kata kerja dengan sedikit perbedaan makna jika digunakan bersama infinitif dan jika digunakan bersama gerund. Kelompok kedua adalah kata kerja dengan perbedaan makna yang jelas jika digunakan bersama dengan infinitif dan jika digunakan bersama gerund.
Verb + Gerund atau Infinitif: Sedikit perbedaan maknaBerikut beberapa kata kerja umum yang bisa diikuti oleh gerund maupun infinitif dengan sedikit perubahan makna. Akan tetapi, perubahan makna masih bisa terjadi karena hampir tidak ada batas kombinasi antara kata kerja dan gerund/infinitif.
- begin – She began to sing. – He began working here last year.
- bother – Don’t bother to wash the dishes. I’ll do it. – Don’t bother washing the dishes. I’ll do it.
- continue – You can continue to live here for 6 months. – You can continue living here for 6 months.
- start – I started to learn the clarinet when I was 8. I started learning the clarinet when I was 8.
Keempat kata kerja ini menggunakan gerund untuk situasi-situasi atau tindakan-tindakan yang sedang berlangsung. Infinitif digunakan untuk informasi faktual.
Hate
- I hate working at my new job (Pembicara sedang kerja di pekerjaan baru tersebut.)
- I hate to work on Sundays. (waktu dan situasi spesifik.)
- I like playing the piano. (Pembicara menyukai proses dan rasa main piano)
- I like to play the piano. (Adalah fakta bahwa pembicara menyukai beramain piano)
- I prefer to study by myself. (Kedengaran seperti kalimat faktual)
- I prefer studying by myself. (Kedengaran lebih personal, mungkin si pembicara sedang belajar sekarang)
- I would love to go to China.
- We would prefer to meet at 7.00.
Allow dan permit memiliki pola tertentu jika digunakan bersama gerund dan pola tertentu jika digunakan bersama infinitif.
allow + gerund – My teacher doesn’t allow eating in class.
allow + object + infinitive – My teacher doesn’t allow us to eat in class.
permit + gerund – My teacher doesn’t permit eating in class.
permit + object + infinitive – My teacher doesn’t permit us to eat in class.
