Would merupakan modal verb yang menyatakan beberapa jenis situasi imajiner atau hipotetik. Would sering disingkat menjadi ‘d, misalnya:
- I would love to learn Spanish.
- I‘d love to learn Spanish.
Would digunakan untuk membuat penawaran dan menunjukkan kerelaan. Contoh:
- Would you like a cookie with your coffee?
- Would you like to go out this evening?
- Would you like some help?
Would juga bisa digunakan untuk membuat permintaan.
- Would you open the door for me?
- Could you open the door please?
Would digunakan untuk menunjukkan situasi-situasi hipotetik. Contoh:

- I‘d go to the beach if it was sunny.
Would sebagai bentuk lampau dari will
Would digunakan sebagai bentuk lampau dari will, yakni digunakan untuk prediksi masa akan datang yang dibuat di masa lampau. Contoh:
- He‘ll call you tomorrow. (Prediksi akan datang dibuat sekarang.)
- He said he’d call you tomorrow. (Prediksi dibuat di masa lampau)
- They‘ll arrive at 7.00. (prediksi dibuat di masa sekarang)
- They told me they would arrive at 7.00. (prediksi dibuat di masa lampau)
Would bisa digunakan untuk kebiasaan masa lmpau, sebuah tindakan yang terjadi secara reguler di masa lampau. Contoh:
- I would often play soccer when I was young.
- My grandfather would always give us candy.
- “He
wouldbe handsome when he was younger.” Tidak benar. - “He was handsome when he was younger.” Ini benar
Untuk kondisi/keadaan di masa lampu kita bisa gunakan “used to”:
