Pelajaran ini adalah lanjutan dari unit sebelumnya. Disini dibahas lebih lanjut tentang beberapa keguanaan lain dari modal verb would.
Wish … would
Wish … would digunakan apabila pembicara menginginkan situasi sekarang menjadi berbeda. Pembicara tidak puas dengan situasi yang ada dan pembicara menganggap bahwa hal yang diharapkan tidak akan mungkin terjadi. Contoh:
- I wish Jane would call me.
- I wish they would stop fighting.
- I wish the dog would stop barking.
- I wish the dog wouldn’t keep barking.
Karena wish…would sering digunakan untuk mengungkapkan keluhan, maka tidak lazim menggunakan struktur ini untuk membicarakan tentang diri anda. Contoh:
- “I wish I’d study more.” Ini tidak lazim meskipun bukannya tidak benar.
- I wish I had more time. Memiliki (“have”) sesuatu merupakan keadaan dan bukan tindakan, jadi kita gunakan past tense “had”.
- I wish I
- I wish I knew the answer.
- I wish I
Would rather
Would rather + kata kerja (kata kerja dasar) digunakan untuk menyatakan kecondongan (preferensi). Ini sering menunjukkan bahwa kita tidak menyukai pilihan yang tersedia lainnya. Contoh:
- “Let’s go shopping this evening”. “Oh, I‘d rather go tomorrow.” (And I don’t want to go this evening)
- “Which book would you rather buy?” “I’d rather buy this one. That one isn’t so good.”
- Can I meet John after lunch, Mom?” “Yes, but I‘d rather you did your homework first”.
- “I‘d rather you didn’t tell anyone about the party. It’s going to be a surprise.”
Would mind
Would mind digunakan untuk membuat permintaan yang sopan. Contoh:
- “Would you mind closing the window?”
- “Would you mind waiting a few minutes? I need to buy some stamps.”
- “Would you mind if we didn’t come tonight? We’re just really tired, that’s all.”
